Rose was born in Scotland on 6th January, 1939 and moved to Oz when a small boy.
At the Olympic Games in Melbourne in 1956, Rose won 3 gold medals, including gold in the 400 metres freestyle, 1,500 metres freestyle and the 4 x 200 metres freestyle relay. In the Rome Games in 1960 he won gold in the 400 metres freestyle, silver in the 1,500 metres and one bronze.
In Tokyo. 1964, he was left out of the team for not attending trials, although he had recently broken the world record for the 1,500 metres.
During his career he broke 15 world records, dominating 400, 800 and 1,500 metre events.
