In 1998 named as NSW Young Achiever of the Year after a whirlwind 12 months of action packed competition. This award gives him the opportunity to be named as Young Australian of the Year, which will be announced by Prime Minister John Howard on Australia Day 26/1/99.
Making his first national swimming team in August, '97, Ian has gone on to smashing world records, winning 4 Gold at the KL Commonwealth Games in September, 1998 and becoming the youngest male swimming champion in Australia's history.
On winning gold at the World Championships in Perth in January, 1998, he said "I'm hurting like hell, but look what I've got hanging round my neck."
In Kuala Lumpur Ian was one of the best swimming performers winning Gold Medals in the 200m and 400m freestyle events together with the 4x100m and 4x200m freestyle relays. In the 4x200m event the team broke the world record. He recently blitzed his opponents at World Cup meetings in Canada and Rio De Janeiro in November, 1998.
Ian, 198cm. tall, and with a shoe size the same as his age, trains at Sutherland Pool under coach Doug Frost.
Ian, besides being a role model to other youngsters, is a great ambassador for the sport of swimming and the youth of Australia. His ambition in life is: "To be the best that I can."
In February '99, Ian joined Westpac as a customer service officer through the Australian Olympic Committee's job opportunity program.
Ian's sponors are Telstra, Westpac, Uncle Tobys, Qantas, Channel 7, Sydney Water and Mazda.
His estimated earnings are $500,000 pa plus incentives.
