Dally was captain of the first Rugby League Kangaroos team to play overseas in 1908-1909.
Messenger was also the first Australian to play the game professionally overseas, touring with the New Zealand All Golds in 1907-1908. He scored 146 points on that tour and arrived home some £200 richer.
The 'Dally M' medal awards are named for him.
