Originally NSW took up half the continent but this size was reduced with the formation of other states between 1825-1911.

The State, in the south-east of the continent, consists a narrow coastal plain separated from vast inland plains by the Great Dividing Range of which the Blue Mountains separate Sydney from the inland. In area the state is 801,428 sq. kilometres or 309,433 sq. miles.
