Sir Peter Abeles
Australia Crest

Businessman with a lifetime in transport, Emil Herbert Abeles born in Hungary in 1924 and coming to Australia in 1949.

In 1950 he founded the Alltrans Pty Ltd transport company which in 1967 was taken over by Thomas Nationwide Transport Ltd (TNT). He became managing director and deputy chairman of TNT and chairman of Ansett Airlines of Australia., owned jointly by TNT and News Corporation, belonging to Rupert Murdoch.

Abeles was a confidant of Prime Minister Bob Hawke and he received the support of the Labor government during the protracted national pilot's strike in 1990.

Abeles' considerable wealth was diminished in the wake of the stockmarket crash of 1987, to which it seems he was slow to respond to.

Peter became Sir Peter in 1972 and has been active outside the world of business over the years. He helped establish the Australian Medical Foundation for Cancer Research and chaired the Olympic Committee which bid unsuccessfully for the 1992 Olympic Games for Brisbane. In 1984 he was made a director of the Reserve Bank.
