The Group 1 event was the brainchild of George Ryder who was later to become chairman of the Sydney Turf Club and was a part owner, together with the writer, of the unlucky second in the race in 1981, Food For Love , beaten by Full On Aces . The name for the race was thought up by George's wife when asked what gift she would give a new 'baby'.
The late T J Smith trained 6 winners of the great race which was first won by Todman in 1957.

There was a sensation in 1999 when the hot favourite, Redoute's Choice , was scratched a few hours before the race when it was discovered the horse had a high temperature.
