 orn in Newcastle on 24th September, 1899.He studied art in London and Holland on a scholarship before returning to Sydney to teach. A 3 time Archibald Prize winner, he won the 1943 prize for a controversial portrait of fellow painter Joshua Smith. Many considered this entry as a caricature and not a portrait. Court action followed on for two years. The portrait was later destroyed in a fire. His Wangi Boy sold in 1998 for $497,500. Bill Dobell was knighted in 1966 and died in 1970.
