LITERATURE A.B.(Banjo) Paterson |  |
 orn Andrew Barton Paterson on 17th February, 1864 at Narrambla, NSW.
Paterson trained as a lawyer before becoming a journalist. He was a regular contributor to The Bulletin, as was Henry Lawson, Steele Rudd and Joseph Furphy. Banjo served as a war correspondent in the Boer War in South Africa. The publication of his poem The Man From Snowy River met with huge success. This story was later made into a major film starring Jack Thompson as Clancy of the Overflow and Tom Burlinson as The Man. Paterson also put the words to Australia's unofficial national anthem - Waltzing Matilda. The song was first performed in public at the North Gregory Hotel in Winton, Queensland on 6th April, 1895. Paterson died on February 5th,1941, aged 76.  |
