elbourne's premier sporting event after the Melbourne Cup.
The race is now held at Albert Park but was previously held in the streets of Adelaide for 11 years from 1985 until 1995 when Jeff Kennett 'stole' it from under the noses of the Croweaters.
The 1999 race, the first of the Formula 1 season, was won by Irishman Eddie Irvine in a Ferrari, his first win in 82 GPs. Only 8 of the 22 starters finished the race and Irvine averaged 190.852 km/h.
A crowd of 118,000 sniffed the petrol and washed down the oysters with fine Australian wines and imported champagne. Better to drink it before the winning driver and runners-up spray it all over the crowd.
